Danny Lane

For Danny Lane, the relationship between art and architecture has long been central to his creative thinking. Working primarily with glass, he explores its ability to become something far beyond a transparent surface, using sculpture, structure and light to challenge our perception of the material. Born in the United States, Lane moved to England in 1975, where he studied with stained-glass artist Patrick Reyntiens. He went on to study Fine Arts at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design, developing an experimental approach to materials and form. In 1981, he established his first studio in London, beginning a career that would span sculpture, architectural installations and furniture design. His work often brings together contrasting materials and unexpected forms, blurring the boundaries between functional objects and works of art. His collaboration with FIAM includes the Atlas collection and Shell Coffee Table, designs that demonstrate his distinctive ability to give glass an extraordinary sculptural presence.
