Domenico Orefice + Claudia Valeriani

For CE(D)RINO, Domenico Orefice and Claudia Valeriani transform the familiar form of a matchstick into a piece of functional sculpture. Carved from a single block of scented cedar, the design plays with the moment before and after ignition: a red pigmented finish evokes the unstruck match, while the darkened ‘Vulcano’ finish suggests its burnt counterpart. Domenico Orefice Design Studio was founded in Milan in 2010, with Claudia Valeriani joining in 2021. Orefice brings an international background in design and art direction, while Valeriani’s experience lies in journalism and communication. Together, their complementary perspectives create an approach that connects design with storytelling and strategy. Working across creative direction and product design, the studio collaborates with artisans, historic manufacturers and international companies, bringing traditional knowledge into dialogue with a contemporary design language.
